Music

  
  • MUSIC 61 - Capital Cantabile

    (1)
    The Capital University Women’s Chorus is composed of students from various academic disciplines at Capital as well as Conservatory students.  This SSAA chorus performs a broad range of literature and has several performance expectations a semester.  All music education voice majors are required to be a member of this ensemble for at least one semester.  Prerequisite(s): Membership is by audition.
  
  • MUSIC 62 - Choral Union

    The Capital University Choral Union is an SATB choir which includes Capital students, as well as singers from various communities throughout Central Ohio. The Choral Union frequently collaborates witt the Chapel Choir in performances of major works.  
  
  • MUSIC 63 - Opera/Musical Theatre

    (1)
    Capital University’s Opera & Musical Theater produces diverse main-stage productions while also developing the skills required of well-rounded singing actors.  Semesters where production is the main focus of the class, the course is by audition only.  Semesters where acting techniques are emphasized, the ensemble is open to all interested students. 
  
  • Music 65 - Capital Consort

    The Capital Consort is composed of students from various academic disciplines at Capital as well as Conservatory students.  This TTBB chorus performs a broad range of literature.   Prerequisite(s): Membership is by audition.
  
  • MUSIC 66 - Philomel

    (1)
    Philomel is a select vocal chamber ensemble of 8-16 voices, and is adept at performing advanced literature from a range of musical styles. Unique to this group is repertoire whose styles include contemporary, jazz and pop music.   Prerequisite(s): Membership is by audition.

    The Capital University MIDI Band is one of the first university ensembles of its type in the nation. Students in this ensemble learn and experiment with equipment and technology used in production of live electronic performances. This group travels all over the region performing for schools, conferences, and other special events.

  • MUSIC 098 - Provisional Music Major Entry Level Hour Lessons

    This course is required of music majors who were not placed into MUSIC 101 - One-Hour Private Lesson (on primary instrument) on their primary instrument when admitted to the Conservatory and is limited to one semester. Students pursuing a BM or BA in Music must attain level 101 by the end of the course to continue as music majors. Special Fee applies (see “SPECIAL FEES” in the FINANCE section of this Bulletin). Prerequisite: Acceptance by Studio Instructor and/or Area Head. Offered each semester.
  
  • MUSIC 099 - Half-Hour Private Lessons

    Open to non-majors who have been accepted into a private music studio and music majors desiring study on a secondary instrument; required of Bachelor of Arts majors for a minimum of four semesters. Students will receive seven hours of private instruction (normally 30 minutes / week) within the semester on voice or a particular instrument. Priority will be given to music majors and placement is subject to faculty load availability. Special fees are applied for one-on-one instruction. Repeatable for credit. Special Fee applies (see “SPECIAL FEES” in the FINANCE section of this Bulletin). Prerequisite: Acceptance by Studio Instructor and/or Area Head. Offered each semester.

  • MUSIC 112 - Intro to Audio and Live Sound Production

    An exploration of fundamental audio production technology, including audio signal flow, audio electronics, maintenance and troubleshooting, audio processing, and live sound systems. Prerequisite(s): Minimum grade of C- in Music 113 or permission of Music Technology Area Head. Offered spring semester for BAPS students and fall semester for B.M. Music Technology students; exceptions by permission of Music Technology Area Head.
  
  • MUSIC 113 - Intro to Music Technology

    An in-depth look at the foundational elements of Music Technology.  This course studies the technologies found in multiple areas of the audio production field, including computer operating systems, digital audio workstations, microphones, audio signal flow and MIDI.  Students will investigate the historical relevance and apply these technologies with hands-on activities and research projects. Prerequisite(s): Music Major, BAPS Music Technology Major or permission of music technology area head.
  
  • MUSIC 120 - Introduction to Music and Listening

    (UC 100 Cognate Course)  This course is called Introduction to Music and Listening and focuses on helping the student develop listening skills to enhance understanding and appreciation of music. Focused listening and the subsequent discussion will develop musical awareness, sharpen perception, and increase musical discrimination. This course is based through a completely different organization, the five essential elements of music: rhythm, pitch and melody, harmony, timbre, and shape or form. The focused  purpose of this course is to introduce ideas and listening strategies to deepen the relationship with music and move listening from a passive activity to one that is active rewarding process.  We will also focus on communicating about music, both verbally and in writing. This course will heighten attention to the sonic dimensions of music, the rich variety of meanings in music, and the social and political functions that are implicated in music of the world. (Offered in fall.)

      Prerequisite(s): Open to all first year students, recommended for students with English 110 placement or higher.  Required for all Bachelor of Music students.  Fulfills University First Year Seminar Requirement.

  
  • MUSIC 120H - Introduction Music and Listening (Honors)

    (UC 100 Cognate Course) The focus of this course is to introduce the students to listening strategies that deepen their relationship with music, and move listening from a passive activity to one that is active and rewarding. This course will heighten attention to the sonic dimensions, the rich variety of meanings, and the social and political functions in the music of our world.  Students will also communicate about music both verbally and in writing.   (Offered fall.) Prerequisite(s): Open to all first year Honor Program students, recommended for students with UC 110  placement or higher.  Required for all Bachelor of Music students.     Fulfills General Education Fine Arts Goal. This course provides a collegiate-level introduction to music within a particular musical style, such as Classical, World, Music, Jazz and Popular, Rock ‘N’ Roll, etc. The section number will be used to identify the styles being offered each semester.   • MUSIC 211 - Production and History of Electronic Music

    A study of the history and production techniques of electronic music since the introduction of analog synthesis through the present. Includes Analog Synthesizer techniques, MIDI Sequencing, Software Instruments, Digital Sampling, and an introduction to hard disk recording. Prerequisite(s): Music Major or BAPS - Music Technology Major or permission of music technology instructor.
  
  • MUSIC 212 - Intermediate Recording Techniques

    An introduction to digital audio recording techniques, including console operation, digital mixing, and media production. Curriculum from MUSIC 112 will be reinforced and built upon, with an in-depth look at recording studios, professional audio engineers and producers. Students will participate in hands-on recording sessions and class projects.  Prerequisite(s): Minimum grade of C- in    and   or permission of Music Technology Area Head.   • MUSIC 213 - Sound Reinforcement Practicum

    A hands-on look at live sound reinforcement, event production, and professional sound installation. Course topics include setup, design, integration, and operation of popular live reinforcement tools used for amplification of music, speech, and other area.  Prerequisite(s): MUSIC 112 Intro to Audio and Live Sound Production .

  • MUSIC 216 - Contemporary Worship Arts Seminar: Leadership

    This course is designed to expose students to the challenges of leadership in the setting of contemporary worship including issues of leading vs. performing, the disciplines of the worship leader, cultural boundaries with personnel and the congregation, and developing the worship team.  These challenges are unique from other areas of the arts and other disciplines.
  
  • MUSIC 218 - Music Theory and Keyboard for BAPS Music Technology

    This course is designed to expose students to music theory and notation skills through the use of the piano. The coursework will focus both on technical skills (scales, chords) and also the application of these skills (harmonizing, improvising). Material will include a variety of musical styles, including but not limited to jazz, pop, rock and classical. Offered fall semester. Prerequisite(s): BAPS Music Technology Major.
  
  • MUSIC 225 - History and Style of Rock N Roll

    A comprehensive study of the early influences on, and the development of, rock music from the early ‘50s to the present. The course focuses on identifying stylistic features of various forms of rock music, discriminating between the purely musical and extra-musical aspects of rock, and understanding its historical development through the seven decades of rock music. The course also examines the symbiotic interrelationship between rock music and society - particularly how the music reflects and affects society. Offered spring semester each year.     Introduction in ballet and/or a dance style class. Students are placed in classes at BalletMet Columbus appropriate to individual experience and development. Two classes per week at times offered  by BalletMet, with a minimum of 15 hours required.     This course includes components of classroom/rehearsal management and design with 50 hours of field-based experience in area high schools. It provides students with the “real world” opportunity to put into practice the knowledge, skills, and theories acquired and practiced during their on campus classroom, rehearsal, and clinical experiences.
