MUSIC 099 - Half-Hour Private Lessons (0.5) Open to non-majors who have been accepted into a private music studio and music majors desiring study on a secondary instrument; required of Bachelor of Arts majors for a minimum of four semesters. Students will receive seven hours of private instruction (normally 30 minutes / week) within the semester on voice or a particular instrument. Priority will be given to music majors and placement is subject to faculty load availability. Special fees are applied for one-on-one instruction. Repeatable for credit. MUSIC 120H - Introduction Music and Listening (3) (UC 100 Cognate Course) This course is called Introduction to Music and Listening and focuses on helping the student develop listening skills to enhance understanding and appreciation of music. Focused listening and the subsequent discussion will develop musical awareness, sharpen perception, and increase musical discrimination. Through the years many colleges and universities have offered classes called Music Appreciation in which students are introduced to musical works from different periods and styles–usually organized by the periods of Western European cultural history. This course is presented through a completely different organization, the five essential elements of music: rhythm, pitch and melody, harmony, timbre, and shape or form. The focused purpose of this course is to introduce ideas and listening strategies to deepen the relationship with music and move listening from a passive activity to one that is active rewarding process. We will also focus on communicating about music, both verbally and in writing. Music is everywhere in our society, but more often than not; we experience it through media and contexts that emphasize the visual. This course will heighten attention to the sonic dimensions of music, the rich variety of meanings in music, and the social and political functions that are implicated in music of the world. MUSIC 340 - High School Music Field Experience (3) This course includes components of classroom/rehearsal management and design with 50 hours of field-based experience in area high schools. It provides students with the “real world” opportunity to put into practice the knowledge, skills, and theories acquired and practiced during their on campus classroom, rehearsal, and clinical experiences. Students then have the opportunity to reflect upon the integration of these theories and practices as they return to campus during the final week of the semester for summary seminars and “PRAXIS” exam practice. During their time in the schools, students will observe the policies and practices of their cooperating teachers, participate in planned musical events of their respective schools, observe and participate in rehearsal planning for an actual rehearsing of musical ensembles.
