Emerging Media Major

Faculty members in Capital’s emerging media program are committed to the belief that students should be prepared for lives of leadership and service by becoming knowledgeable, critical thinkers. The emerging media major integrates the traditional disciplines of film and media production, performance technology, professional writing, and public relations into one major by combining extensive study in emerging media with a broad background in the liberal arts. As a result, emerging media majors develop both an historical understanding and contemporary skills needed to be successful in an increasingly diverse society. Those pursuing a degree in emerging media will develop competencies in the following areas:
Theoretical competencies:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the functioning of traditional disciplines (film and media production, performance technology, marketing, professional writing, and public relations) associated with emerging media. Also, demonstrate a deep understanding of the major theoretical approaches in one area of emergent media.
- Develop a sophisticated skill/ability in one area of emerging media.
- Understand the role that emerging media plays within a global environment.
Functional Competencies:
- Understand the ways in which historical, cultural, and contemporary forces might influence the application of emerging media.
- Critically analyze, synthesize, and evaluate information to create tactical and strategic alternatives that are practical and actionable.
Adaptability and Self-Awareness Competencies:
- Demonstrate effective oral, written, and mediated communication skills for both formal and informal communication.
- Develop an understanding of culturally responsible engagement with individuals, groups and society at large.

Emerging Media Core Requirement:
Public Relations Specialization
Film and Media Production
Journalism Specialization
Performance Technology Specialization
Digital Design Specialization
Additional Requirements:
In order to ensure that the student has a broad exposure to the disciplines within convergent media, the student is required to take three (3) additional courses NOT in their specialization, and only two of the courses can be from the same content area (9 - 12 hours).
Additional Requirements:
Additionally, the student is required to complete an approved off-campus agency internship experience (minimum 4 hours) or an on-campus agency utilizing all of the assets of the Convergent Media Center (CVMC) to be completed. Students who are selected for the on-campus agency experience will automatically have their internship experience approved.
- Off-campus internship experience (4 - 8 credit hours) or
- On-campus agency experience (4 - 8 credit hours)
