Data Science Minor - 18 hours
Data Science Mission:
Data science is a rapidly evolving and growing field of study that applies data analysis to many other disciplines. In order to contribute to both the liberal arts and the professional aspects of the student’s education, the offerings are planned with the following objectives:
-
Demonstrate the ability to program in a higher level language (write functions, utilize control flow in a variety of languages and tools such as Python or R)
-
Demonstrate the ability to think algorithmically
-
Acquire, manage and manipulate data, including joining data from different sources and formats and restructure data into a form suitable for analysis
-
Develop the ability to build and assess data-based models.
-
Demonstrate an understanding of and ability to detect patterns in data, to draw inferences and conclusions supported by the data, and communicate those insights
|
Capstone Experience (3 credits required)
A capstone research experience (MATH 491 ) or (CS 491 ) or internship experience (MATH 495 ) consisting of a data science project is required. (May be satisfied with an independent study or internship in another department with approval by the math department that a data science project was completed). Students must disseminate the results of their project either in a presentation or short paper to the Math and Computer Science Program faculty.
