Department Chair-Carlson
Professors-Bowman, Carlson, Pantsov
Associate Professor-George, Loopstra

The discipline of History is devoted to the study of the human past.  This requires both collecting and interpreting evidence so that we can see patterns and trends that, as the historian Samuael Eliot Morison said, “relate the past creatively to the present.”

Because no other discipline offers such a wide and diverse study of the human experience, history is an invaluable background for any student. Employers seek people capable of organizing and analyzing information–the very kind of background a study of history provides. With a history major a student can enter many careers, including in teaching, historic preservation, museum administration, research, foreign service, journalism, law, government, and business.

The History department offers two majors:
  • History
  • History with Education Licensure
The History department also offers three minors:
  • Art History
  • History
  • Public History/Historic Preservation
