The mission of the Department of History is to provide a liberal arts education which enhances the development of critical thinking and its expression in effective communication. The word liberal with its Latin root libero, to free, to liberate, or to open, describes the transformational experience of studying the wonders of the past and its relationship to the present.

The History department offers two majors:
  • History
  • History with Education Licensure
The History department also offers two minors:
  • History
  • Public History/Historic Preservation

 

The following are the specific learning outcomes for the History Program:

Critical thinking: Graduates of the History Program will be able to think critically using primary and secondary sources to interpret the past.

Historical problem solving: Graduates of the History Program will be able to critically assess s appropriate research methods and sources for solving historical problems.

Effective communication: Graduates of the History Program will demonstrate competence in writing, speaking, listening, and reading. 

Comparative analysis: Graduates of the History Program will understand social, political, economic, and cultural transformations in at least two world regions. 

 

Historical awareness: Graduates of the History Program will recognize how past events impact contemporary society. 

Human agency: Graduates of the History Program will be able to identify examples of human agency, change, contingency, change and continuity in history. 

Ethical judgment: Graduates of the History Program will be able to exercise ethical judgment and objectivity in their reading, writing, and speaking about history.
