EDUC 521 - Advanced Teaching of Writing

The purpose of this course is to familiarize you, teachers of English and Language Arts, with past and current theory, research and practice in the teaching of writing.  During the semester you will examine writing as it relates to other aspects of language, especially to reading.  Through classroom experiences and action research you will reflect on how writing is actually being taught in local schools. In addition, you will reflect on what you know about yourself as a writer and a teacher.  As part of this process we will be writing, responding to each other’s work, and sharing individual research.  We will also examine different modes of writing and appropriate teaching strategies; we will formulate assignments and discuss various assessment methods. The class will be presented in a hybrid manner, meeting on campus for five sessions during the semester
